What Do You Want From Your Money?

Depending on who you talk to, the concept of retirement is arguably one of the most confusing, stressful, worrisome, fantastic, wonderful, ill-defined subject ever created. The good news is, it means you don’t have to work anymore. The bad news is, you have to find a solution to provide you the monthly paychecks you used to receive when you were working. To frame this conversation, we asked “What do you want from your money,” or in other words, “What do you want your money to do for you?” I have found many people, possibly even you, would respond with “I want my money to grow” or “I want to make a good return” or “I want to try and keep up with the stock market.” While these all seem like great well-thought-through goals for your money, they really are terrible answers.

But it’s not your fault, you’ve been trained by the financial industry, and probably your advisor, and maybe even your spouse, to answer this way like all the other sheep in the flock! Your money should be invested with one overall purpose: to improve your life and the lives of others you care about. That’s it, so simple, yet seemingly so elusive. Think about it, how does your “money growing” or “making a good return” or “keeping up with the stock market” improve your life or the lives of others you love? They don’t, because what if you suffer a large loss to your savings like you did when the stock market lost -50% from 2000-2002 and then suffered another -50% loss again from 2007-2009? Trust me, two (2) -50% losses would NOT improve your life. So, let’s look at what retirees have said they are most concerned with regarding their finances.

Recent Studies Show Retirees Want 7 Things From Their Money

  1. A guarantee they won’t run out of money for as long as they live.
  2. To avoid all large stock market losses and never suffer another 2008 type market crash again.
  3. To increase their income without getting killed with income taxes.
  4. To understand and reduce the total fees they pay, both direct and hidden.
  5. To earn acceptable rates of return without taking excessive risks, protect what they have.
  6. To know what they can potentially leave to their beneficiaries after they use their assets for income.
  7. To have all the details of their entire plan for retirement in writing.

The problem is, if you are like most people, even those with an advisor, you are not getting these things.

The Bottom Line: We All Want Financial Independence

I call Financial Independence, something different; I call it Financial Freedom. The concept of Financial Freedom is not new or unique, until now it just hasn’t been defined and refined well enough to make it implementable for all retirees. How do you know when you have become Financially Independent? How do you know when you have actually achieved Financial Freedom?

It’s simple – you know you have become Financially Independent and achieved Financial Freedom when you:

  • Stop thinking as your money as your investments and think of it for what it is – your savings.
  • Stop doing without and deferring your money for some far-off time.
  • Stop worrying about large losses.
  • Stop worrying about running out of money.
  • Start receiving dependable income that will last for as long as you live
  • Start planning your next trip-of-a-lifetime when you are currently on a trip-of-a-lifetime.
  • Start using (spending) your money NOW.
  • Start living the retirement of your dreams.

Keep your money safe out there!
